DOWN NORTH ON THE LABRADOR. London: James Nisbet & Co., Limited, n.d. [1911]. Octavo, twelve inserted plates with illustrations from photographs, original pictorial blue cloth stamped in white with pictorial label affixed to front cover. First British edition. Grenfell, an English physician and advocate of the "muscular" Christianity so characteristic of the Victorian period, went to sea as a medical missionary and, after discovering the woeful conditions of people (including English emigres) in Labrador, Canada, devoted the rest of his life to building an impressive network of charitable institutions there. His writing, both of fiction and non-fiction, helped aroused support for his causes. Small 1913 Christmas printed presentation plate affixed to front paste-down. A clean, near fine copy. (#133411).
