"ALEXANDRINS" [poem]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT SIGNED (TMsS). Twelve lines on full sheet of letter size paper, ribbon copy, dated "Apr. 15, 1929" in different typewriter at top left, signed in full by author (black ink, forward slanting hand) at bottom with handwritten note: "From 'Ebony and Crystal.'" "A translation into French of Smith's own 'Alexandrines,' both consisting of three quatrains in the Alexandrine meter, a six-beat iambic line that originated in French romances about Alexander the Great (perhaps in tribute to the hexameter of classical epics). The classicism of the form stands in contrast to the romantic melancholia of its content." - Robert Eldridge. Sidney-Fryer, Donald. Emperor of Dreams: a Clark Ashton Smith Bibliography, p. 105 (p. 34 for the English original). Small tape repairs reinforcing old fold creases, else fine. Provenance: Samuel Loveman papers. (#136382).
