(#140031) STORIES OF THE SEEN AND UNSEEN. Oliphant Mrs, Margaret Oliphant Wilson.

STORIES OF THE SEEN AND UNSEEN. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1889. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-5] 6-123 [124: blank] [5-7] 8-190 [3-5] 6-134 [3-5] 6-164 [165-166: ads] [note: complete despite gaps in pagination], fly leaves at front and rear, original medium brown cloth, front panel stamped in dark brown, spine panel stamped in gold, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in olive-green. First collected edition. Omnibus volume of supernatural stories, mostly sentimental religious fantasies of the "Little Pilgrim" and her after-death experiences; "The Land of Darkness" most interesting, presenting a mean-spirited metropolitan Hell, surprisingly modern in its depersonalized brutality. Also three fine ghost stories, "Old Lady Mary," "The Portrait," and "The Open Door." M. R. James considered this last one of the "really good ghost stories I know wherein the elements of beauty and pity dominate terror." The material collected here was published earlier by Roberts Brothers in four small clothbound volumes titled A LITTLE PILGRIM (1882); OLD LADY MARY (1884); THE OPEN DOOR. THE PORTRAIT (1885); and THE LITTLE PILGRIM: FURTHER EXPERIENCES. ON THE DARK MOUNTAINS. THE LAND OF DARKNESS (1889). Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 141. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 2-75. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-135. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1259. Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, pp. 266-67. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 308-09. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-186. Bleiler (1978), p. 150. Reginald 10969. Owner's signature dated 25 December 1889 on front flyleaf. Cloth rubbed, mostly at spine ends, corner tips, and along outer joints, a few rubs and scuffs, spine a bit darkened, a very good copy. (#140031).
