A long novel set variously in Louisville, KY, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Alaska that combines a lengthy nonfiction transcontinental travelogue, social, political and economic commentary, and a sensational romance in which two murders are committed: one killer is struck down by lightening, the other brought to justice by the hero, a lawyer with a thought reading machine (described in detail on pages 300-302). A fully developed SF novel (overlooked by all the genre bibliographers) intertwined with informed mini-essays on economic and social issues of the day, including, but not limited to, women's rights, Mormons, immigration, free trade, and free coinage of silver.
