A presentation copy with signed inscription by Bill to Brenton (?) S. Chase dated June 1898 on the front free endpaper. A novel about the Civil War, rather sympathetic to the Confederacy, with a flashback to the hero's father, who fought with Napoleon Bonaparte. It was his campaign in Egypt that brought into the family "the sword of the pyramids," whose history dates back to 1402 and is steeped with superstition about curses and destiny. After the end of the Civil War, the hero moves on to the fighting in Mexico against the invading French. This mostly a military novel, moving through the nineteenth century with a measured, tragic pace. (It doesn't seem to have anything to do with reincarnation.).
