The first of the four Skylark novels and Smith's first published fiction. The story was jointly written, 1915-1920, with Mrs. Lee Hawkins Garby, who helped with dialogue, and supplied the love interest according to Smith. It was widely rejected by publishers until T. O'Conor Sloane bought it for AMAZING STORIES, where it appeared as a three-part serial, August-October 1928. It was first published as a book in 1946.
