First edition. This copy has a copyright notice and the imprint of Henry W. Rees, Stereotyper on the verso of the title leaf for volume 1, the garbled footnote "*Bra6.db ury. P. 6 / *Breckenridge." is present on page 239 of volume 2, and the first page of the terminal advertisements in volume 2 is titled "BOOKS / PUBLISHED / BY CAREY, LEA & BLANCHARD" and the terminal advertisements are not boxed. According to Kaser (The Cost Book of Cary & Lea 1825-1838), 4000 copies were printed as of 18 October 1836. Howes I81. Field 760. Graff 2158. Sabin 35129. Streeter 33129. Faint, irregular darkening to spine edge and upper edge of front cover of volume 2, 65 mm horizontal closed tear in rear free endpaper of volume 1, endpapers foxed, scattered foxing to text blocks, mostly early and late, but a very good copy.
