A compilation of 560 hymns, plus doxologies and anthems collected, and edited, by Greenwood whose "main object has been, to gather from the existing body of divine poetry, those hymns which I deemed the best calculated to be sung in our churches. I consequently adopted all which appeared to me to possess the requisite poetical and devotional character, without regard to the particular denomination of Christians to which their authors belonged. Hymns from Wesley's collection, and some Moravian hymns from the Christian Psalmist of Montgomery, I regard as among the richest contents of this volume." - author's "preface." The rare first printing of an exceedingly popular hymnal (fifty-seven editions by 1853) by Francis William Pitt Greenwood (1797-1843), a prominent Boston clergyman who was ordained pastor of the New South church (1818-1820), Dr. Freeman's colleague at King's chapel (1824-1827), and sole pastor of King's chapel from 1827 until his death.
