THE ADVENTURES OF THEODORE. A Humorous Extravaganza as related by Jim Higgers [pseudonym] to One of the Rough Writers. Chicago: H. J. Smith & Devereaux Co Publishers, [1901]. Small octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-6] 7-210 [211-214: blank], nine full page illustrations by Henrich, original pictorial light gray cloth, front and spine panels stamped in brown and black. First edition. A humorous satire on Theodore Roosevelt, his adventures as a hunter in the American West and his hyper-macho style. Opie Read (1852-1930) was successfully hidden by the pseudonym Jim Higgers -- one of the Rough Riders -- until a later edition identified him as the author. Read was a prolific Chicago author, who was born and began his career in the South. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 H-600 (under Higgers). A bit of very light foxing to cloth, endpapers and edges of text block, but a fine copy. A lovely copy. (#164564).
