Collects seven stories, "six of which combine the criminous with the supernatural and feature solicitors solving various mysteries. 'Torrance V. Teacher' involves a ghost obsessed with a getting a former disposition overturned. A retired civil engineer recounts how his marriage came to an end in 'A Strange Recontre' as a result of being confronted by his cousin in London days after his cousin has been accidentally killed. 'The Writing on the Wall' is a convoluted novella centered around a lost ring, an apparition, and a mentally ill patient whose insanity is the result of an experiment in mesmerism conducted during his youth. In an 'An Irregular Marriage,' a picture drawn by a young wife suffering from typhoid fever offers the solution to her husband’s mysterious disappearance several years earlier. 'A Glasgow Mystery' and 'The Milnathort Murder' include ghosts revealing the actual perpetrators of violent crimes. Entertaining stories, but very predictable and conventional." - Boyd White.
