The large folded map, 44.7x32.5 cm (17 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches), is "Map of the State of California[.] Published by Lapham & Taylor, for the California Register and Statistical Reporter. San Francisco, Ca. 1856." This almanac-like booklet is packed with useful statistics and information, including a chronology of principal events in California history; data on rivers, mining canals and ditches, and artesian wells; extent and location of agricultural land; descriptions of each county and new counties not organized; list of routes and wagon roads over the Sierra Nevada; steamboat and stage routes, schedules and fares; a list of newspapers in the State of California; U.S. postal regulations; table of distances from Sacramento to the county seats of the different counties, and from place to place on the principal roads throughout the state; legal value of foreign coins; and much more. The last section (pages 34-48) is an attractive array of advertisements (some with illustrations) for various San Francisco business ranging from electro-chemical baths to the Noisy Carrier’s Book & Stationery Company. The title was registered 5 June 1856 and E. A. Taylor is listed as the copyright holder. Cowan (1933), p. 99. Greenwood 661 and Appendix A 103. Minor tanning to text paper, some leaves dog eared at corners, map has a bit of tanning and several small creases and tears at edges and along folds. A good copy overall.
