Yosemite Falls. Chromolithographic print.

Yosemite Falls. Chromolithographic print. [New York: William Jennings Demorest], n.d., circa 1878-1889, probably 1878. No artist is credited. Printer's imprint at lower left edge reads: "BENCKE & SCOTT LITH 207 FULTON St. N. Y." The Yosemite Falls print and a print of the Falls of Niagara were offered to each subscriber to DEMOREST'S MONTHLY MAGAZINE. Demorest's, a very popular women's magazine, was published under various titles from 1865 to 1899. From 1878 to 1889 it was called DEMOREST'S MONTHLY MAGAZINE. The print is mounted on cardboard. A printed label is mounted on the verso which advertises the prints and the magazine and includes a five-paragraph description of Yosemite Valley. "A MAGNIFICENT PRIZE! / SURPASSING ALL OTHER OFFERS. / EACH SUBSCRIBER TO / DEMOREST'S MONTHLY MAGAZINE, / at Three Dollars a year, will be presented with a premium of / TWO ELEGANT CHROMOS, companion pictures of the two / most desirable and popular subjects in America -- the / FALLS OF NIAGARA AND YOSEMITE FALLS. / ... Every home in America should possess these invaluable illus- / trations of art and beauty, and no person of taste and enterprise / can afford to be without / THE MODEL MAGAZINE! / Which has been greatly enlarged and improved, and now contains / the essentials of all the others. / Address W. JENNINGS DEMOREST, / 838 Broadway, New York City." Print is very good; printed label is rubbed and has several old tape stains. (#166817).
