Gelatin silver print, image 9.8x24.2 cm. (3 7/8 x 8 9/16 inches), on a larger card mount. Stock number 90, title and imprint in negative strip along the bottom of the print. An impressive view of the beach and the seven-story Cliff House, built in 1896 to replace the more modest original Cliff House that was completely destroyed by fire on Christmas night, 1894. Built by Adolf Sutro below his estate on the bluffs of Sutro Heights, the 1896 Cliff House survived the 1906 earthquake with little damage, but burned to the ground on the evening of 7 September 1907. Billington operated the Sutro Heights Gallery in San Francisco, 1895-1900s. Mautz, pp. 104-105. Mild wear to lower corners of mount; print nearly fine. Billington's photographs are uncommon.
