THE RECOVERED CONTINENT: A TALE OF THE CHINESE INVASION. Columbus, Ohio: The Harper-Osgood Co., 1898. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi-viii [1] 2-331 [332: blank], flyleaves at front and rear, five illustrations in the text, all but one full-page, two maps, original decorated tan cloth, all panels stamped in black, all edges stained red, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in olive green. First edition. Science fiction novel of time travel and future war. Toto, Jewish genius, assumes power in China in bloodless coup. Chinese army equipped with advanced weaponry conquers all of Asia and Europe. Toto proclaims himself emperor of the world and outlaws war. Narrative ends before question of American participation is addressed as sleeper awakes from scientific experiment -- apparently not a dream as narrator, who had vanished from his era and is presumed dead, has retained three coins used as currency in the future, and locates records of his participation in future events. "... The overall image is that of an American imitation of George Griffith ... A sleeper-awakes story that got out of hand. Very imaginative with good visual scenes and nice detail, but sometimes amateurish in presentation. Still, a considerable work." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1582. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 590. Wu, The Yellow Peril (1892), pp. 37-9. Bleiler (1978), p. 145. Reginald 10511. Wright (III) 3875. Signature of L. A. Johnson on the front paste-down. Rubber stamped name of Donald A. Wollheim on the rear free endpaper. Cloth worn at spine ends and corner tips, cloth tanned and dust soiled, spine panel age-darkened, inner hinges partially cracked, but a sound, good copy. (#167352).
