SAN FRANCISCO BURNED DISTRICT [caption title]. [Chicago]: Laird & Lee, Publishers, n.d. [1906]. Single sheet, 33.3 x 25.7 cm (13.1 x 10.1 inches), printed on recto only. This dramatic two-color map, copyright 1906 by William H. Lee, was published in Chicago by Laird & Lee. It vividly depicts the devastating fire that burned for three days, destroying structures on more than 500 blocks in today's financial district. An inset at bottom left underscores the magnitude of the fire, comparing it to earlier fires in Baltimore and Chicago. Despite the alarming map and inset, the reassuring "Plain Facts" declares: "The public must not conclude, from the graphic descriptions and many scenes of the burned district, that the beautiful Golden Gate city has been entirely destroyed … The new San Francisco will be grander and more beautiful." This was published in GLIMPSES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO DISASTER GRAPHICALLY DEPICTING THE GREAT CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE ... (Chicago: Laird & Lee, Publishers, copyright 1906). Minor damp stains along vertical fold, several closed tears along folds professionally mended, a very good copy. (#167378).
