According to Sabin, the earliest edition is dated 1858 and the work was reprinted in 1859 (see Sabin 52322). It had a color frontispiece (according to some authorities), ten color plates (one folded) and a map. According to the publisher's note (page ii): "The Steel Engravings with which this Work is embellished were executed from Photographs taken expressly for it by Mr. Holmes, of Broadway, New York, who was commissioned by the Publishers to visit the scenes represented."
