The Yosemite by John Muir. JOHN MUIR.

The Yosemite by John Muir. New York: The Century Co., MCMXII [1912]. 20.5 cm, pp. [1-2: blank] [i-vi] vii [viii] ix-x, [1-2] 3-284, 32 inserted plates with illustrations from photographs, 3 inserted maps (all folded), title page printed in black and blind, original dark green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in purple, lavender and gold, top edge gilt, other edges rough trimmed. First edition. This book, intended as a guidebook for Yosemite travelers, was written at the request of Muir's friend and fellow conservationist Robert Underwood Johnson, editor-in-chief of The Century Publishing Company. Much of the material is either a revision or a reprint of Muir's previously published writings. The flora, fauna and scenic attractions of the park are described and there is an account of the glacial origin of Yosemite Valley. Also present is some history of Yosemite Valley, including biographical sketches of two pioneer Yosemite residents, James C. Lamon and Galen Clark. Muir concludes with an essay on Hetch Hetchy Valley in which he makes an eloquent plea to preserve the "Tuolumne Yosemite." The three maps are: "Administrative Map of Yosemite National Park, California. Topography by R. B. Marshall and A. H. Sylvester Surveyed in 1893-94, 1896, 1898-99, and 1905 ... Edition of April 1910," "Travel - Guide Map of the Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California ... After Topographic Map of Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, California, by the U.S. Geological Survey" and "Travel - Guide Map of the Yosemite National Park, California ... After Topographic Sheet of Administrative Map of Yosemite National Park by U.S. Geological Survey" Most of the photographs were furnished by the Pillsbury Picture Co. BAL 14767. Kimes 308. Early owner's signature in ink on the front free endpaper. Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, a bright, tight, very good copy. A lovely copy of this book. (#167583).
