(#168099) THE WINTER'S WREATH FOR MDCCCXXXII. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Anonymously Edited Anthology.

THE WINTER'S WREATH FOR MDCCCXXXII. London: Whittaker, Treacher, and Arnot, and George Smith, Liverpool, [1831]. 12mo, pp. [i-xii] [1] 2-372, two inserted plates, plus a presentation plate, original decorated full green leather, elaborately tooled in gold, a.e.g., yellow coated endpapers. First edition. A notable gift annual for the inclusion of "Proserpine. A Mythological Drama, in Two Acts. By the Author of 'Frankenstein,'" pp. [1]-20. Includes a Gothic story set in Scotland, "The Highland Fortress of Lessing Cray: A Tale of Second Sight," by W. B Chorley. Also prose and poetry by Mrs. Hemans, William Howitt, Mary Howitt, and others. A long-running literary annual that lasted for twenty-one issues (1824-1844). Following this issue, THE WINTER'S WREATH merged with FRIENDSHIP'S OFFERING (1833). The list of plates calls for twelve, but there are only three here: the frontispiece, "Largo di Nemi -- Roma," and the inscription plate. Curiously, an early owner has corrected the date 1832 to 1834 on the title page and in the preface, why is not known to us. Faxon 1797. Leather rubbed at edges, a very good copy in an attractive binding. (#168099).
