North Dome [i.e. Half Dome].

North Dome [i.e. Half Dome]. N.p. [Philadelphia]: [E. P. and L. Restein], n.d. [copyright 1875]. Chromolithograph, 13.2x18.5 cm (5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches). This small chromo of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley was published circa 1875 by E. P. and L. Restein. It is one of at least seven chromo views of Yosemite Valley published by the Resteins. The only other examples of this print we could locate are held by the American Antiquarian Society (they have two copies, one with a 1875 copyright statement and one with no copyright statement). There is no copy at the Library of Congress. This copy of the print was made in 1879 or earlier. It has a gift inscription on the verso dated 9 October 1879. A later printing is titled "North Dome / Yosmetie [sic] Valley" and has the publisher's imprint, "Restein's Oil Chromo," in the lower left corner of the plate. These cheap prints often were used as promotional material by commercial firms (one example at AAS has an ink stamp: "Compliments of Wanamaker & Brown, Boys & Men's Clothing, Sixth & Market Sts. Phila.)." See, Peters, America on Stone, p. 332 who states "I have never seen a print by the Resteins." The chromo is mounted on a mat (22.5x27.2 cm; 8 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches) with printed decorative border, as issued. The image is fine, the mat is chipped at edges and soiled. (#168443).
