THREE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED (TLsS). Each 1 page, dated 28 December 1962, 28 February 1963 and 16 July 1970, first two addressed to "Dear Tay" [Richard Taylor], both signed "Derleth," the third to "Mrs. Taylor," Richard Taylor's wife, signed "August Derleth." On Arkham House half-size letter stationery with Frank Upatel illustration of moonlit scene with a train passing through a rural wooded area. In the first letter Derleth provides specifications for the dust jacket for THE HORROR FROM THE HILLS, a Cthulhu Mythos short novel published by Arkham House in 1963, with a jacket designed by Taylor. In the second letter Derleth acknowledges receipt of the jacket art which he likes and has sent to the printer. "I like it, and I am sure our readers will, too, for they are very enthusiastic about the quality of the jackets you have done for Arkham House." In the third letter, addressed to Richard's wife, Derleth thanks her for "sending along that drawing of Dick's -- I suspect he intended it for a design to head stationery ..." Derleth is "shocked to learn of Dick's death" and asks if she might "by any chance have available an obituary I could see?' Derleth would like to include a paragraph about Taylor in the next issue of THE ARKHAM COLLECTOR, "since he not only did some of our best jackets but also was responsible for the basic design of Arkham House books." Richard Taylor (1902–1970), Canadian-born artist, is best known for his cartoons published in THE NEW YORKER. He designed five book jackets for Arkham House. Each letter has faint horizontal mailing folds, the 28 February 1963 letter has some faint tanning, mostly along one of the folds, all are very good or better. (#169759).
