13 typewritten letters, signed (TLsS), dated 10 March 1995 to 6 June 1998, to Juanita Coulson. Accompanied by an undated signed Thanksgiving holiday card, carbons of Coulson’s replies to Norton’s letters, and Coulson’s archive for her unpublished AN INDEX OF ANDRE NORTON’S WITCH WORLD, including a bound notebook with 20 pages of notes in Norton’s hand, titled “Notes on Witch World Background”; a handwritten note by Norton to publisher Sharon Jarvis authorizing publication of Coulson’s WITCH WORLD concordance for 10% of any moneys earned from its sale; a copy of the second edition of Robert Schlobin and Irene R. Harrison’s ANDRE NORTON: A PRIMARY AND SECOND BIBLIOGRAPHY (1994) signed by Norton on the title page; and a promotional flyer for High Hallack, Norton’s SF writers’ retreat and research facility. Juanita Coulson is writer and well-regarded member of science fiction and fantasy fandom who collaborated with a number of writers, including Marion Zimmer Bradley and Andre Norton. She is best known for her CHILDREN OF THE STARS series (1981-1989) and for co-editing, with her husband Robert, YANDRO, which was nominated for the Hugo Award for best fanzine for 10 years in a row. In 1990, because the WITCH WORLD series had become so vast that Andre Norton could not reread all the books and stories, Norton commissioned Coulson to write a WITCH WORLD concordance so that Norton could write THE WARDING OF WITCH WORLD (1996). While the concordance was never published, Norton did use Coulson’s completed concordance to write THE WARDING OF WITCH WORLD. Norton’s copy of the manuscript of the concordance is now in the archives of Texas A&M University, and is posted online in its entirety, with the permission of Norton’s estate, on Norton’s official website as AN INDEX OF ANDRE NORTON’s WITCH WORLD. In addition to various personal matters, the primary subject of Norton’s letters is Coulson’s work on her WITCH WORLD concordance. Related topics include the construction of High Hallack, Norton’s SF writers’ retreat, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, upcoming volumes of Norton and Martin Greenberg’s CATFANTASTIQUE anthology series (1989-1999), Norton’s writing of THE WARDING OF WITCHWORLD (1996), and Lyn McConchie continuing the WITCH WORLD series with the publication of CIARA’S SONG (1998). Coulson’s archive for her unpublished WITCH WORLD concordance is extensive and includes the following: • Coulson’s own copy of the computer printout manuscript for AN INDEX TO ANDRE NORTON’S WITCH WORLD (270+ pages) • 2 Oxford index card file boxes full of Coulson’s note cards for the concordance • Several file folders of Coulson’s handwritten and typewritten notes for various sections of the concordance, as well as drafts of these sections • Numerous carbons of letters from Coulson to various individuals, such as critic and writer Sandra Miesel and Sharon Jarvis of Toad Hall Publishing, about securing a publisher for the WITCH WORLD concordance • A photocopy of Sandra Miesel’s introduction to the Gregg Press edition of the WITCH WORLD novels published in 1977 • A copy of the manuscript of a tribute Coulson wrote about Norton for a science fiction convention program book • A copy of the program book for Noreascon 3, the 47th World Science Fiction Convention held in 1989 when Norton was the guest of honor and that includes Norton’s essay "To the Red Sands of Mars" and Joan D. Vinge’s "Andre Norton: The Mother of Us All." • 2 cassette tapes of Coulson talking with Norton, ca. 2000 • 2 memory cards after Norton’s death • A copy of Sasha Miller and Ben W. Miller’s WITCH WORLD: ROLEPLAYING IN ANDRE NORTON’S WITCH WORLD (1989). The archive is very good to mostly fine throughout. (#169785).
