"THE BLACK SKULL MURDERS by Carlton Ross [pseudonym]. London: Gerald G. Swan, [1942]. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-192, original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. "Bill Morrow, crime reporter for the LONDON EVENING COURIER, and Jacqueline 'Pinky' Pinker, a fashion columnist for the same newspaper, work with Chief Inspector Haddock of Scotland Yard, to investigate a series of strange events involving an escaped black panther, a supposedly haunted estate, a fortune in diamonds, criminal racketeers, and a mysterious murderer known as 'Yellow Face.' The black skull in the book's title refers to a small black-enameled porcelain skull that serves as a key clue to the mystery. Like all of Brooks' novels, THE BLACK SKULL MURDERS is a screwball affair filled with over-the-top situations and plenty of humor. It's no work of art, but it is great fun" (Boyd White). Edwy Searles Brooks (1889-1965) early in his career wrote many serial stories, including Sexton Blake, Nelson Lee detective, Clive Derring and others, mostly boys adventure fiction. In the late thirties he turned to adult fiction and wrote many detective stories using the pseudonyms Berkeley Gray and Victor Gunn-his main ones-with almost 100 books between the two. Hubin (1994), p. 700. A very good copy in very good dust jacket with two shallow chips from edges and some dust soiling to rear panel. (#169886).
