THE NOVELS OF ALEXANDRE DUMAS: THE CASTLE OF EPPSTEIN [with] SYLVANDIRE [with] GABRIEL LAMBERT AND OTHER STORIES [with] CONSCIENCE [with] CATHERINE BLUM AND OTHER STORIES [with] THE WOLF-LEADER. Newly translated by Alfred Allinson. London: Methuen & Co., n.d. [1904]. Large octavo, six works in two volumes: pp. 96, 160, 120, 165, 115, 115, text printed in double columns, original red cloth, spine panels stamped in gold. First edition in English, later issues or printings. A bind-up of six volumes, all translated by Alfred Allinson. and part of a uniform edition of "The Novels of Alexandre Dumas." Of interest for two supernatural works: THE CASTLE OF EPPSTEIN and THE WOLF-LEADER. THE CASTLE OF EPPSTEIN, a translation of LE CHATEAU D'EPPSTEIN (1844), is a Gothic romance with ghosts and hauntings. THE WOLF-LEADER, first published in Paris by Cadot in 1857 in three volumes, is "Dumas's most successful supernatural work by far ... an entertaining historical romance based on traditional legends of the werewolf." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 138. A very curious printing or issue, some parts showing evidence of separate issue, but none of these parts are illustrated with inserted plates found in some of the first printings. Furthermore, the title leaf for CONSCIENCE is most likely a facsimile. Nevertheless, these volumes are very hard to find in first printing format and the six volumes are standard texts of these works. Very good. (#169981).
