Everett Ruess combination edition[.] A vagabond for beauty edited by W. L. Rusho[.] Introduction by John Nichols[.] Afterword by Edward Abbey[.] & Wilderness journals edited and with an introduction by W. L. Rusho. Salt Lake City: Gibbs Smith, Publisher, [2002]. 21.5x14 cm, pp. [1-10] 11 [12] 13-14 [15] 16-441[442] [443-448: blank], illustrations, map, brown boards, spine panel stamped in gold, pictorial endpapers. First combined edition. Collects the known extant letters to family and friends and the 1932 and 1933 journals of Everett Ruess (1914-1934), a young artist and poet who mysteriously vanished into the barren Utah desert in November 1934. Yosemite is the topic of letters written in 1930, pages 33-36, and the High Sierra in 1933, pages 112-121. Although Ruess probably wrote more journals, only those for 1932 and 1933 are known. The text published here was taken from photocopies of his original journals, not the later bowdlerized typewritten transcripts. Ruess spent the summer of 1933 in the High Sierra, first sightseeing and exploring in Sequoia National Park, then traveling north to Yosemite National Park through today's Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wilderness Areas. The High Sierra journal entries, Saturday, May 27, though Thursday, October 12, comprise pages 332-437. The two parts of the combined edition were first published in 1983 and 1998 respectively. Boards rubbed at lower spine end and lower corner tips, a nearly fine copy in very good dust jacket with mild creasing and rubbing at edges. (#170023).
