CUMMINGS MONK ... II. HE WAKES AN ECHO [published in THE PALE APE AND OTHER PULSES]. Typescript with handwritten corrections by Shiel throughout. 35 small quarto manuscript leaves (each approximately 20x17 cm). This is possibly the setting copy with small holes punched in the upper left corners of each leaf. Includes a title leaf annotated by John Gawsworth, as well as the original title leaf on brown paper titled in Shiel's hand, with Gawsworth's printed Realm of Redonda bookplate affixed to the verso. The typescript is professionally bound in marbled boards with leather spine label. This is one of the Shiel manuscripts known to have been in John Gawsworth's collection in the summer of 1947. It is recorded in Morse, The Works of M. P. Shiel Updated (1980) T-64 ("Cummings Monk, II, He Wakes an Echo: 35-page lightly corrected typescript"). The manuscript is accompanied by an unrelated handwritten note by Shiel sent to his London agent from Paris, France. The note is undated but postmarked 6 November 1903. The subject is cheap reprints of Shiel's earlier works. When he returns from France he will provide a novel "more suitable for 6d called 'The Man Stealers,' a story of the Duke of Wellington, 90,000 words." Fine condition. (#170064).
