Original dry plate photograph, 12.2x19 cm (4 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches) affixed to a larger mount with caption printed below the print. Not dated but circa 1886-1887. Image shows a logger with axe reclining in the cut of a California Redwood he is felling. The location is not identified, but probably north of Santa Cruz near Felton. Mrs. Ella M. Morris, born in Massachusetts in 1852 was the daughter of C. H. Butterfield. "Gallery at 166 [sic, i.e. 156] Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, 1883-1887. Her husband, S. I. Morris, joined her in the studio, 1886-1887" (Mautz). Image fine; mount rubbed, worn at corners. Rare. (#170541).
