(#170822) THE SCREAMING SKULL AND OTHER STORIES. Sydney Horler.

THE SCREAMING SKULL AND OTHER STORIES. London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, n.d. [1930]. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-318 [319-320: blank], original orange cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel has lettering stamped in black and diamond design in red. First edition, first printing. Mixed collection of mystery and weird stories, including "The Vampire" and "Black Magic," the latter featuring the psychic investigator Sebastian Quin, hero of Horler's novel, THE EVIL MESSENGER (1938). Title novella is a conspiracy thriller with SF elements, to wit a death beam transmitted over the wireless. According to Locke, this copy bound in orange cloth in 3/6 jacket is the "cheap edition/issue," but he is wrong, this is the first impression in the correct 3/6 jacket. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-93. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 116. Bleiler (1978), p. 103. Reginald 07404. Hubin (1994), p. 414. A fine copy in very good or better 3/6 first printing pictorial dust jacket (with illustration by Hastain) with two short closed tears at edges and some general dust soiling. A lovely copy. (#170822).
