MYSTERIOUS LEGENDS OF EDINBURGH. NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME TOLD IN PRINT. Edinburgh: William P. Nimmo, 1864. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii-viii] [1] 2-272, nine inserted plates, original maroon cloth, spine stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed. First edition. A collection of mostly supernatural fiction of the author's invention (not legends and folklore retold) whose stories in earlier collections, CURIOUS STORIED TRADITIONS OF SCOTTISH LIFE, first and second series (1860-1861) were characterized by a reviewer as "annalistic fiction." Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1991). Wolff 4041 (recording an 1886 yellowback). Spine ends and corner tips rubbed, front and rear covers a bit scuffed and bubbled, spine panel a bit spotted and darkened, but a very good copy overall. (#171189).
