First separate edition in English. A melodramatic ghost story in verse with a "succession of images of solitude and decay, -- such a brooding horror of ancestral crime and desolation" (Dobson), which Poe called "a masterpiece of it's kind," first published in 1844 in HOOD'S MAGAZINE AND COMIC MISCELLANY. This separate edition was preceded by a 48-page translation of the poem into Latin verse by P. A. Longmore published in 1855. Faint black stain on the front cover, free endpapers lightly foxed, a very good copy. (#171212).
