(#171422) THE DOOR OF THE UNREAL. Gerald Biss.

THE DOOR OF THE UNREAL. New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1920. Octavo, pp. [1-2] 3-5 [6] 7 [8] 9 [10] 11-311 [312: blank] [313-316: ads] [317-320: blank] [note: last two leaves are blanks], original olive-green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First U.S. edition, first printing. Werewolf novel, first published in Britain by Eveleigh Nash in 1919, praised by H. P. Lovecraft in his Supernatural Horror in Literature (1945). Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-25. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 172. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 34 (recording the British first printing). Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 36. Bleiler (1978), p. 24. Reginald 01345. A fine, bright copy in first printing dust jacket. The jacket is a bit dusty and has short closed tears and some shallow chips from edges, but is far and away the best example we have seen. This edition is nearly as elusive as the first printing of the British edition and both are rarely found in nice condition, let alone in jackets. (#171422).
