"OUR EARTH HERE collects twenty-two stories, primarily romantic melodramas, many with criminous elements, most of which illustrate the hardships women face because of the roles to which society relegates them as subordinates to men. The most effective story in the collection is 'Darkness and Cruel Habitations,' a particularly grisly account of a native raid on a homestead that leaves the wife who survives very caring but completely insane. 'Will-O'-The Whisp' and Jack-O-Lantern,' one of the few pleasant stories in the book, is a light fantasy about a romance between two fairy spirits" (Boyd White). Under the pseudonym of "Dolf Wyllarde," Dorothy Lowndes "published more than forty volumes of fiction between 1897 and 1939 ... Lowndes output intriguingly includes both exotic tales and more serious examinations of the predicament of single women.
