(#171540) THE BANSHEE'S WARNING AND OTHER TALES. Riddell Mrs., H, nee Charlotte Elizabeth Lawson Cowan.

THE BANSHEE'S WARNING AND OTHER TALES. London: John Macqueen, 49 Rupert Street, 1903. Octavo, pp. [1-3] 4-120 [121-128: ads], publisher's green pictorial wrappers printed in black, side stapled. First paperbound edition? A collection of six stories, including "The Banshee's Warning" (a.k.a. "Hertford O'Donnell's Warning"), first published in the 1867 Christmas number of LONDON SOCIETY and first collected in FRANK SINCLAIR'S WIFE AND OTHER STORIES (1874). "Six stories, four having some concern with Ireland. The first tells how the Banshee goes to London to warn the scapegrace son of an Irish family, who is a clever surgeon, yet always plunged in debt. It is a study of a strange personality" (Brown). Macqueen's edition apparently is a reprint of a collection of Riddell's short fiction published by Remington in 1894. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 423. Wolff 5796. Brown, Ireland in Fiction 1430. Loeber and Loeber R193. Wrappers worn, spine taped, several closed tears in rear cover repaired with tape, some leaves dog-eared, pulpy text paper tanned, a good copy. A rare book. (#171540).
