"With the compliments of / the Author" written in an unknown hand on the front free endpaper. Eight short stories, one of which has a rather ambiguous supernatural element, "The Reresby Mote Ghost," about a thing that appears at infrequent intervals in the mote around an old house: is it a ghost? a monstrosity? a big fish? "From the Dark Past" is a bibliomystery featuring a Renaissance book about an elixir. Most of the others are animal stories. "The Blue Dryad" is about a poisonous snake. "How the Fiend Fetched Sharon Fulksay" is about a hawk who descends on a Jewish immigrant in the suburbs. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Cloth spotted (foxed), spine panel darkened (as usual with this book), else a very good copy. A scarce book. (#171709).
