THE HOLLOW GLOBE; OR THE WORLD'S AGITATOR AND RECONCILER. A TREATISE ON THE PHYSICAL CONFORMATION OF THE EARTH. Presented Through the Organism of M. L. Sherman, M.D., and Written by Prof. Wm. F. Lyon. Chicago: Religio-Philosophical Publishing House. S. S. Jones, Proprietor, 1871. 12mo, pp. [i-iii] iv-vi [vii] viii [9] 10-447 [448: blank] [449: ad] [450-456: blank] [note: last three leaves are blanks], flyleaves at front and rear, original black pebbled cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, brown coated endpapers. First edition. A highly eccentric occult work presenting information concerning the physical nature of the Earth transmitted by advanced spiritual beings. The revelations are channeled through medium M. L. Sherman and interpreted and written down by Lyon. The work's basic premise is that the Earth is a hollow globe built by mechanics who "have passed through all possible conditions below them" and have attained "the wisdom and power that would be absolutely essential in the construction of a world." All planets and moons in the Solar System are artificial and were constructed by the world builders. The planet farthest from the Sun is the oldest. At some point the excess rock and water on Earth (a young planet) will be used to build a new world and Earth's entire surface will be inhabitable by man. Man must develop his senses to advance to the higher spheres of Spiritual existence. The tone of the work is nationalistic; the authors believe that the "Polar Sea must be explored" and American pioneers seeking inhabitable living space should emigrate into the Earth's interior. A second edition was published in 1875. Early owner's signature on the front flyleaf and small ink-stamped name on the front free endpaper. Spine lean, cloth soft at spine ends, three corner tips lightly worn, several gatherings proud, a bright, very good copy. An uncommon book. Interesting bookseller's label, H. Snow's Liberal & Reform Bookstore, San Francisco, affixed upside down on the rear paste-down. Coauthor William F. Lyon was a Sacramento, California, resident. (#171763).
