Prang & Co., in the Office of / the Librarian of Congress, at Washigton, D. C." This chromolithograph, signed by Key and dated 1872 in the stone, is part of "Prang's American Chromos" series, fourteen of which (as of 1 April 1874) are California views after John R. Key. All the views in this series are 14x7 inches high or long, and each is priced $3.00. John Ross Key (1832-1920) "studied art in Munich and Paris before establishing a studio in Boston ... In 1869 he moved to San Francisco for a one year stay and concentrated on landscapes of Yosemite, Tahoe, Point Lobos, and the Mariposa Big Trees. His California works were lithographed by the Louis Prang Co. in the 1870s and at the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia he received a gold medal for his oil of The Golden Gate" (Hughes, p. 254). Peters, California on Stone, p. 181. The print is in excellent condition. The original publisher's mount is worn and damp stained at edges and age-darkened.
