This first printing is scarce and is rarely found in nice condition. Tipped onto the rear free endpaper is a lengthy typewritten letter dated 29 October 1959 from William Rae to "My dear Widnall (the inscribee, or perhaps his son or a relative) with a lengthy account of the historical background of the novel which he says "is an amazing book, not only because of its actual wording but because of the revelation it gives of the most uncommon knowledge possessed by the author."
