(#172468) SEVEN XMAS EVES. BEING THE ROMANCE OF A SOCIAL EVOLUTION. Clo Graves, Justin Huntly McCarthy, Mrs. Campbell Praed, G. Manville Fenn, Florence Marryat, B. L. Farjeon, Clement Scott.

SEVEN XMAS EVES. BEING THE ROMANCE OF A SOCIAL EVOLUTION. London: Hutchinson & Co., 34 Paternoster Row, n.d. [1893]. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii 1-264 + 16-page publisher's catalogue dated "April, 1894" inserted at rear, 28 illustrations by Dudley Hardy, publisher's bevel-edged pictorial blue gray cloth, front and spine panels stamped in green, red, black and yellow, rear panel stamped in black, all edges plain. First edition, later issue. Collaborative romantic melodrama which tells the story of two orphans who triumph over ignorance and poverty and ultimately marry. Portions of the story, especially Mrs. Praed's section, "Some Evidence of Alfred Curran, News Paper Reporter, Concerning a Pair of True Lovers," are criminous. The tale appears to have been intended for young readers as the publisher's catalogue is a list of illustrated gift and prize books. Hubin (1994), p. 25. Owner's name and address on the front free endpaper. Slight spine lean, cloth just a bit dusty, spine panel stamping dull, corner tips a bit turned, a very good copy. Scarce. (#172468).
