CENTRAL CASCADE. WATKINS GLEN, N. Y. Albumen print. Watkins, N. Y. J. D. Hope, Photographer, n.d. [1880s]. Cabinet photograph, 15x10.2 cm on slightly larger tan mount with letterpress below the image. Photograph circa 1880s by James Douglas Hope (1846-1929) of a group of tourists at the Central Cascade of Watkins Glen NY. Watkins Glen State Park in New York's Finger Lakes region was opened to the public in 1863 and was privately operated as a tourist attraction until 1906 when it was purchased by New York State. The centerpiece of the 778-acre park is a 400-foot-deep narrow gorge with nineteen waterfalls cut through rock by Glen Creek which empties into Seneca Lake. J. D. Hope’s father James first painted the glen in 1870. He moved there in 1872, establishing an art gallery that became a popular attraction at the glen. His son then began to photograph tourists, and to sell stereopticon views. Hope's cabinet photographs are uncommon. The image is fine; there are a few spots on the verso of the mount. (#173062).
