Odhams (Watford), Ltd., 22 May 1937-16 October 1937 (volume 1, numbers 1-22); 23 October 1937-14 May 1938 (volume 2, numbers 23-52). Tabloid, approximately 15 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches, 52 issues bound in two volumes with original color self wrappers preserved. A complete run of the first year of MODERN WONDER, a twopence tabloid weekly magazine published from May 1937 through March 1941 when it ceased publication, probably due to paper rationing during World War II. Aimed at boys and young men, it was largely a factual magazine devoted to modern technology and how machines work, but it included science fiction serials and stories in each issue. The lead fiction in the inaugural issue is "The Space Machine," a serial written by John Beynon [Harris}, better known under his later "John Wyndham" pen name. Issues were generally 16 pages in length (some ran to 20 pages), with covers and double-page center spread printed in color, including work by Leslie Ashwell Wood who went on to illustrate center page spread cutaways for EAGLE in the 1950s. The 52 issues are bound in two cloth volumes with covers preserved. A few issues have tiny tape mends to margins, but overall, the condition is excellent. Long runs such as this one are now uncommon.
