ATLAS OF THE GOLDFIELD[,] TONOPAH AND BULLFROG MINING DISTRICTS OF NEVADA. PUBLISHED BY THE W. H. SHEARER PUBLISHING CO. 503 CALIFORNIA STREET[,] SAN FRANCOSCO, CAL. COPYRIGHT, 1905 BY W. H. SHEARER. Chicago, Illinois: Rand, McNally & Co., Printers and Engravers, 1905. Octavo (21.7x14 cm), pp. [1-10] 11-93 [94: blank] [95: ad] [96: blank] [pagination includes front and rear endpapers], five folded maps, publisher's black cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind. First edition. The "atlas," published by W. H. Shearer in San Francisco, contains five maps showing mostly mining claims. The maps cover a region in southwestern Nevada where gold and silver deposits were newly discovered, "from 50 to 150 miles wide, extending south by east from Reno, and following, generally speaking, the sweep of the Sierra Nevada mountain range." The maps are: (1) Goldfield Mineral Map, printed in color (23 x 24 inches). In fine condition; (2) Map of Tonopah Mining District Nevada, printed in color (25 x 24 inches). Short binding tear at left that just enters the border; (3) Map of Bullfrog Mining District Nye County Nevada, black & white (34.7 x 22.3 inches). Minor creasing and a short edge tear at left; (4) Goldfield-Columbia Townsite Esmeralda County Nevada, black & white (23 x 21 inches). In fine condition; (5) Map of Tonopah, Goldfield and Bullfrog Mining Districts and Region Adjacent, black & white (23.3 x 23 inches). This map is laid in. It has numerous short splits at the fold junctions, two 1.5 inch edge tears at bottom, and a pair of fold separations that extend 1 to 1.25 inches into the image at top. The accompanying 93 pages of text describe the region and its mineral wealth, print state mining laws, and include an extensive 48-page business directory. Advertisements for local businesses are interspersed throughout. "Not only are the five colored maps highly significant, there is a directory of mining companies operating in 1905 in the districts named in the title, giving corporate officers and location of business. An optimistically written descriptive review of southern Nevada occupies pages 9-31. Interesting advertisements are interspersed throughout. Rare" (Paher). Paher 1778. Some rubbing and damp staining to cloth (latter mostly on the rear cover); text a bit toned, maps are in excellent condition. Provenance: Signature of W. N. Cummings dated 9 June 1906 on the front paste-down and his brief inked annotations in the early portion of the text. A nice copy of an uncommon book. (#173508).
