SOUVENIR GUIDE[.] THE MANAGER OF THE HOTEL DEL MONTE PRESENTS, WITH HIS COMPLIMENTS, THIS GUIDE TO MONTEREY AND ITS ENVIRONMENTS [cover title]. [San Francisco: A. L. Bancroft & Co. Printers & Lithographers, n.d. [circa 1886]. 21x14.8 cm, pp. [1-2] 3-24 [25] [26-40: ads] (pagination includes wrappers), 4 illustrations (1 folded), 6 floor plans, publisher's self wrappers, side stapled. First edition. An elaborate pamphlet promoting the Hotel Del Monte, that "reminds one infinitely more of a modern English country mansion than of an American watering-place hotel," with six pages of floor plans (including those for the four-story new addition) and several illustrations of the hotel, including a folded engraved "view showing south and west frontage and club house, from photograph by Watkins, taken in mid-winter." In addition, the pamphlet promotes Monterey and other nearby "points of interest" -- Pacific Grove Retreat (illustrated), Point Pinos Light House, Moss Beach, Seal Rocks, Cypress Point, and the Carmel Mission. Several pages are devoted to describing the mild California climate, including "medical testimony regarding Monterey as a health resort" and a table of temperature of Monterey taken at Hotel del Monte, January 1881 to December 1885. The 15-page illustrated advertising section is devoted to tourist services, mainly transportation and lodging. Advertisers include the Northern Division of the Southern Pacific Company, Raymond & Whitcomb tours, Oceanic Steamship Company, traveler's accommodations in Santa Cruz, and more. Rocq 5713 (24 pages; probably not counting unnumbered page 25 and the advertisements). Mild chips from lower fore-edge corners of first few leaves, folded frontispiece detached from staples, a good or better copy. (#173942).
