The large color folded map of the Thousand Island region, 19x61 cm (7 1/2 x 24 inches), shows the routes of the excursion steamers in red. John A. Haddock (1822-1898), author, historian, printer, journalist, publisher and politician, a resident of Watertown, NY, moved to Philadelphia after the close of the Civil War where he established Haddock & Son, a job printing firm. After the print shop was destroyed by fire, Haddock returned to Watertown to prepare his most important book, the 920-page GROWTH OF A CENTURY (1894), a history of Jefferson County, New York, from 1793 to 1894. He returned to Philadelphia in December 1897 and in May 1898 was struck and killed by a train on a grade crossing at the corner of Ninth and Thompson streets. Haddock's life included several unusual events, including an international incident during the American Civil War that led to his court martial, and an 1859 ballooning accident in the Canadian wilds. Haddock's account of the balloon trip is found on pages 40-56. Cole 387. A nearly fine copy. (#174403).
