FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE VITICULTURAL OFFICER TO THE BOARD OF STATE VITICULTURAL COMMISSIONERS, FOR THE YEAR 1881. Sacramento: State Office J. D. Young, Supt. State Printing, 1882. pp. [1-2] [i-vii] viii-xl [1-3] 4-174 [175-176; blank], two folded plates, other figures in the text, publisher's yellow wrappers printed in black, sewn. First edition. The report and appendixes are largely devoted research on vine diseases and vine pests, especially phylloxera, an aphid-like insect first identified in France in 1863, that spread to vines worldwide from North America in the mid-nineteenth-century. Shameful underfunding by the state impeded vital research needed to control the pests and diseases. Scattered private owner's stamps on covers, title page, etc., several short closed tears and small chips from wrapper edges, some soiling and age-darkening to wrappers, a very good copy. (#175248).
