LE MARQUIS DE CHASTELLUX DANS L'AMÉRIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE DANS LES ANNÉES 1780, 1781 & 1782 that provides important observations of America by François-Jean de Chastellux (1734-1788), a French military commander and man of letters, first published in much abbreviated form in 1781, with the complete and authorized edition published in Paris in 1786. Chastellux first came to America in 1780, serving on the staff of the French General Rochambeau fighting against the British in the American Revolution. In this role, Chastellux worked closely with George Washington, forming a long-lasting friendship. This work is written as a daily journal of Chastellux’s participation in the Revolutionary war and his travels around the new nation, including visits to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Howes notes that "in its completed form constitutes the first trustworthy record of life in the United States." The two maps are of the eastern seaboard from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Cape May and Delaware Bay, and from Philadelphia to below the Chesapeake and westward to the Allegheny Mountains.
