WHEN SPIRITS TALK: THE TRUE STORY OF GHOST STORIES. N. p. The Ghost Story Society, [1990]. Octavo, pp. 29, illustrated with black-and-white reproductions of four issues of GHOST STORIES magazine, pictorial wrappers, stapled. First edition. "Ghost Story Society Special Booklet," number 2. Includes a ten-page article by Ashley about the pulp magazine, GHOST STORIES, which began in 1926 and ran for 64 issues, published by Bernarr Macfadden, a health enthusiast and one of the more colorful figures in American publishing at that time. Also reprints two stories from the magazine: "Child or Demon -- Which?" by Victor Rousseau, and "A Soul With Two Bodies" by Urann Thayer. Ashley makes the point that while WEIRD TALES, its better-known competitor, emphasized material horror, GHOST STORIES had a more ghostly focus. A fine copy. (#175492).
