SMALL ARCHIVE COMPRISING HIS CORRESPONDENCE WITH AUTHOR, ANTHOLOGIST AND REVIEWER MICHELE B. SLUNG COMPRISING THREE TYPEWRITTEN NOTES, TWO ON POSTCARDS, AND A TYPEWRITTEN LETTER (DATED 1988-1991) AND FIVE OF CARROLL'S FIRST SIX NOVELS, THREE WARMLY INSCRIBED TO SLUNG. The novels present are THE LAND OF LAUGHS (Viking 1980), VOICE OF OUR SHADOW (Viking 1983) with review slip and publisher's publicity sheet laid in, BONES OF THE MOON (Century 1987) inscribed by Carroll and dated 1987, A CHILD ACROSS THE SKY (Century 1989) inscribed by Carroll and dated 1989, and OUTSIDE THE DOG MUSEUM (Macdonald 1991), inscribed by Carroll and dated 1991. The missing novel is SLEEPING IN FLAME (1988). Michele's copy of the book is apparently lost, but the cover letter forwarding a copy is present. It reads in part: "Here is an interesting disaster. This edition of FLAME was all set and ready to go for pub date in England October 5. They sent me a copy of the hard and paperback about six weeks ago and I just happened to be skimming through it when I realized pages 240-241 were reversed. Naturally, pages 240-241 are probably the twomost important, pivotal pages in the story ... I called England and had a fit and lo and behold, they trashed the whole printing ... It's ready now in its right form, but as a boobyprize they sent me a bunch of these mutants. I thought you might like to have one, as well as an early read of the book. Please let me know what you think. You know I listen very carefully to what you have to say ..." Carroll's correspondence is filled with information on his work in progress, as well as mostly favorable comment on stories published in I SHUDDER AT YOUR TOUCH ... (Roc 1991), Michele's partially original horror anthology. Literary projects discussed by Carroll include film possibilities of "Mr. Fiddlehead," a novella for Century, "a kind of coda to" SINGING IN FLAME, finishing AFTER SILENCE, writing the screenplay for VOICE OF OUR SHADOW, "which is like having sex with your own child, sort of," DOG MUSEUM, "which so far has drawn glorious reviews in England," and the aforementioned SLEEPING IN FLAME. The correspondence is in fine condition. The books, residing for several decades or more in a farmhouse in New York state's Hudson Valley, are about very good or somewhat better, most with foxing or soiling to page edges, and dust jackets with modest signs of wear and tear and spotting to edges of flaps.
