(#176592) THE BRIDE OF FORT EDWARD, FOUNDED ON AN INCIDENT OF THE REVOLUTION. Adirondack Fiction, Delia Salter Bacon.

THE BRIDE OF FORT EDWARD, FOUNDED ON AN INCIDENT OF THE REVOLUTION. New York: Published by S. Colman, No. VIII Astor House, Broadway, 1839. 12mo, publisher's blind-stamped decorated gray green cloth, printed paper spine label, tan endpapers. First edition. The second book by Delia Bacon (1811-1859), a romance in dialogue form (but not a play according to Bacon) set during the American Revolution in upstate New York. Strategically situated at "the great carrying place" (a portion of the Hudson River with rapids and falls where further travel by water to the north was not possible and Native Americans would leave the river and carry their canoes overland to the headwaters of Lake Champlain), Fort Edward came under Burgoyne’s occupation during the American Revolution. In 1777, an event took place here which has been said to have changed the course of the Revolution. With the tragic murder of Jane McCrea, many area settlers took up arms against the British and helped to cause Burgoyne’s defeat in Saratoga. BAL 556. Wright (I) 218. Sabin 7801. American Imprints 54087. The first two gatherings are bound in reverse order -- a binder's error, light scattering foxing throughout, a very good copy. (#176592).
