WHITTIER CALIFORNIA SOME OF ITS ADVANTAGES AND RESOURCES CITY OF HOMES AND SOLID PROSPERITY 1906. Compliments of Whittier Board of Trade copyrighted [cover title]. [Whittier: The Whittier News Print.], 1906. 13.2x19.2 cm, pp. [1-2] 3-6 [7-9] 10 [11] 12-16, illustrations, tan wrappers printed in black, stapled. The 1,259-acre Thomas ranch in present day Whittier was sold In 1887 to the Pickering Land and Water Company who subdivided it and sold lots to establish a “Quaker Colony." As the community’s Quaker foundation soon took root, it led to the City of Whittier’s incorporation in 1898 with 585 residents. The community’s early growth was tied to its agriculture (lemons, oranges and walnuts) and oil industries. The successful conveyance of water into the community in 1890 by Simon Murphy’s East Whittier Land and Water Company along with the arrival of the Southern Pacific, Pacific Electric and Santa Fe Railroads all provided critical infrastructure to enable Whittier to thrive into the twentieth century. Not in Rocq (1970). Mild wear at edges, a very good copy. (#177235).
