JACK IN THE BUSH OR A SUMMER ON A SALMON RIVER. Boston: Jordan, Marsh & Company, 1890. Octavo, pp. 374, illustrations, publisher's brown cloth stamped in black and gold. Later printing. A boys' novel about fishing set in Canada in the Gaspé Peninsula, first published in 1888. A picture the Gilded Age era of private fishing. From the 1850s until the 1970s, many of the best salmon rivers in the Gaspé were leased by wealthy American and Canadian fishing enthusiasts and managed by exclusive private clubs. These clubs established opulent lodges along the rivers, with amenities like indoor plumbing and common dining rooms, catering to the affluent. Access to these exclusive fishing spots, or "pools," was strictly enforced, and nonmembers were not allowed. A fine copy. (#177731).
