"Salomy Jane," a tale about a spirited Gold Rush girl who helps a mysterious stranger escape vigilantes, is one of Bret Harte's most popular stories. It was first collected in STORIES IN LIGHT AND SHADOW (1898) and reprinted as a separate book with illustrations by Harrison Fisher and Arthur I. Keller in 1910. Several films were based on Harte's novella, most notably the acclaimed 1914 silent film made by the California Motion Picture Corporation, starring Beatriz Michelena. This film was based upon Paul Armstrong's 1907 dramatized version of Harte's story which introduced many incidents not found in Harte's original version --- but the film made "no attempt to follow the dramatic version of Mr. Paul Armstrong" (preface). The 1914 film was followed by a remake in 1923, and a 1932 film, Wild Girl. Spine panel just a bit sunned, a touch of wear at edges, a very good copy. (#178401).
